Teatro irrepresentable

Here is a near-historic video on Lorca’s theatre group La Barraca. It is a fragment from a longer film “La barraca: teatro en el camino” and has images of the poet acting, filmed with the camera of the historian and La Barraca participant Gonzalo Menéndez Pidal and the actress María del Carmen García Lasgoity singing La Barraca’s anthem.

And here is a very smart one on his “impossible” (or “unstageable”) theatre — theatre that questions conventions for staging and directing, requiring a new kind of scenography.

Lorca’s lecture Charla sobre teatro (1935) was written about Yerma, not about the “impossible” plays, but it takes into account all of his theatrical experience and is worth thinking about in connection with all of his work.
